PJ Brunson's musical career began around the age
of five when she climbed a tree and wrote her first love song (borrowing
the melody from the Love Theme from "Exodus"). She performed her first
public gig at the age of 16 and shortly afterward, made her first
television appearance on a local A.M. in Columbia program. Since those
humble beginnings, she has toured the Southeast, opening for the likes
of Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Tim Sparks, Peter Finger, and the
Charlotte Pops. She has performed at festivals, corporate events,
listening rooms, coffeehouses, restaurants and private events, gathering
faithful fans along the way.
PJ is an award-winning songwriter, having
placed in national and regional competitions. Her compositions
cross multiple genres, but most fall into the category of
country/folk/Americana songs, and new age piano and guitar
instrumentals. She is a BMI affiliate.
PJ's voice has been compared to Joan Baez and
Ann Murray and one listener wrote, "I must admit that your voice
entertained my ears much like a rare port entertains my tongue, smooth
and rich with subtle flavors of nature." She is a
classically-trained guitarist with a unique finger-picking style. She is
also an accomplished pianist.
PJ was
influenced from a very early age by her guitar-picking grandfather who
would nightly croon love songs from the living room while she sat at
his knee. Since then she has been constantly growing as a
musician soaking up influences from every genre of music. They all
molded PJ in some way, making her today a seasoned performer comfortable
in many acoustic genres. Her performances of witty, heart-felt original
music are peppered with covers by artists she respects like Joan Baez ,
Simon and Garfunkel, Indigo Girls, Green Day, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Her repartee with an audience is relaxed and
convivial. She’s equally comfortable in the spotlight or as soothing
musical atmosphere.
PJ's debut CD, "Come Hell or High Water" has
received airplay from various radio stations across the United States
and Europe. One listener wrote of the collection, "A well-done
recording of heartfelt tunes about people like you and me, our fathers,
mothers, and grandparents. PJ knows how to tell a story, and hold our
attention. And after the song is over, it's still there in our head, to
be played over and over again."
PJ Brunson was born in El Paso, Texas, the
daughter of a gentle artist mother and a musician cowboy father with good
looks and a wandering eye. She grew up in little Lugoff, South Carolina,
learning discipline and perseverance from her loving adoptive
father. When she left Lugoff for college on a music
scholarship, the town’s denizens changed the population count on the
Welcome sign. She graduated from Winthrop College with a degree in
English and Communications and holds a Master's Degree in English from
UNC-Charlotte. She currently resides in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
